Dear friends,
Over the past year, we continued our struggle to uphold respect for human rights in the Negev-Naqab particularly with respect to residents in the unrecognized villages. Since the summer, our efforts have been largely focused on the village of Al Arakib, however, we maintained our activities in other areas and spheres of work.
We continued to engage in international and United Nations advocacy to bring pressure on the Israeli government to respect its obligations under international law. For instance, Khalil Alamur, a member of the Forum’s secretariat, participated in the 3rd Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and we developed new collaborative relationships with international human rights organizations such as Amnesty International and American Jewish organizations who were especially concerned about JNF’s forestation activities.
We also strengthen our relations with many Israeli civil society organizations and introduced new members to the Recognition Forum which is dedicated to the struggle for the recognition of rights of the unrecognized villages in the Negev-Naqab. Additionally, the number of events and seminars held in the Multaka-Mifgash Cultural Center were doubled during these difficult times in order to heighten awareness and understanding.The Forum also released the
following reports available on our website in Hebrew, Arabic and English:
- Report to the UN concerning the implementation of the Covenant for Social, Economic and Cultural Rights in Israel;
- Report on employment discrimination of Arabs in the public service in the Negev-Naqab;
- Report on house demolitions in the Negev which convinced with International Human Rights Day.
Needless to say, our efforts can only be sustained with financial and human resources and thus we welcome new members to the Forum and monetary contributions. The annual membership fee is 40 shekels for a single person and 60 shekels for a family. If you cannot afford these costs, you are welcome to pay any affordable sum.
Alternatively you may wish to make a contribution. We highly appreciate each and every contribution which will go directly to supporting our activities and projects.
With wishes for better times,
Musa Abu-Ganem, Avner Ben-Amos, Rodaina Abu-Freicha, Kalil Alamour, Rachel Naparstak, Sa’id Al-Sana, Yacov Manor
